Chlamydia
 
[ç-, griechisch], Chlamydi|en, Gattung obligat zellparasitischer Mikroorganismen, die sich nur zellgebunden vermehren können; früher als »große Viren« betrachtet, heute eindeutig den Bakterien zugeordnet; umfasst zwei Arten: Chlamydia psittaci, Erreger der Papageienkrankheit (Ornithose), und Chlamydia trachomatis, die fast ausschließlich auf menschliche Schleimhäuten parasitiert und verschiedene Krankheitsbilder verursacht, u. a. das Trachom sowie Lymphogranuloma venereum.
 
Bei Tieren sind Chlamydieninfektionen v. a. bei Vögeln und Nutzgeflügel, bei Rindern, Schafen und Schweinen sowie Katzen von Bedeutung. Die Behandlung erfolgt mit Breitbandantibiotika, v. a. mit Tetracyclinen oder Erythromycin.
